Bangladesh Flood Emergency

Recent severe monsoon rains have caused a Bangladesh flood emergency, affecting nearly 3 million people across the southeast districts and upstream in Tripura, India. This crisis underscores the urgent need for flood relief donations and financial aid, as communities struggle to recover from the impact.

Hundreds to thousands of people are stuck and seeking shelter for evacuation

The Bangladesh Water Development Board's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) reports that the water levels in the Kushiyara, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, Muhuri, Feni, and Halda rivers are above the danger level. The Bangladesh flood situation is particularly critical as the Muhuri River in Feni has reached its highest point in 40 years.

The Wheel of Life Is Stuck:

Tripura authorities suddenly opened the Dumboor Reservoir’s sluice gate, leading to severe flooding in eight districts of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh flood crisis worsened as the Gomti River, now a torrent, washed away fish, destroyed infrastructure, and submerged key highways, paralysing traffic and crippling communities. As of August 2024, this flood disaster has intensified, underscoring the urgent need for effective upstream water management amid record-breaking rainfall.

Effect on the Surrounding Areas and Community

Extremely poor families have been severely impacted by the devastating Bangladesh floods and intense rainfall, especially those forced to relocate due to damaged shelters. Since such calamities are uncommon in most affected districts, many individuals are ill-prepared or unaware of how to respond.
