Laylatul Qadr (لیلة القدر), or the Night of Decree or Night of Power, is the most sacred night in Islam. It marks the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is described in Surah Al-Qadr as “better than a thousand months.” Muslims believe that worship on this night brings unparalleled forgiveness, blessings, and answered prayers.
On Laylatul Qadr, Allah (SWT) decrees the fate of every living being, the sustenance of creation, and all major events for the upcoming year. This is affirmed in the Quran:
“Indeed, We sent it [the Quran] down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. On that night is made distinct every precise matter.”
(Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:3–4)
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“On Laylatul Qadr, the angels descend in numbers greater than the pebbles on Earth.”
(Ibn Khuzaymah)
Laylatul Qadr is a night of unparalleled spiritual leverage. The Quran emphasizes:
“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:3)
A single act of worship (prayer, dua, charity) is rewarded as if performed for 83 years and 4 months.
The Prophet ﷺ promised:
“Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and sincerity, all their past sins will be forgiven.”
(Bukhari, Muslim)
Laylatul Qadr marks the night the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the Cave of Hira. The first verses commanded the Prophet (PBUH) to “Read! In the Name of your Lord.” Allah states:
“Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:1)
Hadith Insight:
Aisha (RA) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to seclude himself (in Itikaf) during the last ten nights of Ramadan and say: ‘Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days.’”
(Bukhari)
While the exact date is hidden, the Prophet (PBUH) urged Muslims to seek it in the last 10 nights of Ramadan, particularly on odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th).
To encourage consistent worship throughout Ramadan’s final days.
Maximize blessings with these Sunnah practices:
The Prophet (PBUH) taught this iconic supplication:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Transliteration: Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu anni
Translation: “O Allah, You are the Pardoner, and You love to pardon, so pardon me.”
Other Recommended Duas:
Devote the last 10 days to mosque seclusion for focused worship.
As Laylatul Qadr is the night of the Quran’s revelation, reading, memorizing, and contemplating its meanings is highly meritorious.
Donating to those in need multiplies blessings. Consider giving to causes that support the poor, such as Alqulub Trust, to maximize your impact.
Constantly asking for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness during this night can erase sins and bring immense rewards. Repeat SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and Salawat.
Perform ghusl (ritual bath) and wear clean clothes to honor the night.
While subtle, the Prophet (PBUH) described these signs:
The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever prays during Laylatul Qadr with faith and seeking reward will have all past sins forgiven.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Worship on Laylatul Qadr is equal to 83 years and 4 months of worship (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3).
Allah sends countless angels to spread peace and blessings (Surah Al-Qadr 97:4).
Good deeds are multiplied exponentially during this night, making it the best time to seek Allah’s mercy.
