What is Qurbani, and why is it so important to Muslims around the world? With Qurbani Eid 2026 quickly approaching, this Qurbani Guide by Al Qulub Trust hopes to help you understand what Qurbani is, its purpose, and how Al Qulub Trust can help you fulfil this religious duty.

What is Qurbani in Islam

So, let’s begin by answering the question of what is Qurbani in Islam. Qurbani is an act of worship which requires the sacrifice of an animal during the days of Eid al-Adha in the month of Dhul Hijjah. It is done in honour and remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), and his devotion to sacrificing his own son for the sake of Allah.

However, the act of Qurbani is more than just about the sacrifice of an animal. It is a form of worship that displays faith and obedience, along with gratitude for all the blessings Allah has sent down to you. The meat from the sacrifice is also shared with family, friends, and those in need, all to spread joy and happiness on the day of Eid.

Is Qurbani Compulsory

Many often ask is Qurbani Farz (compulsory). Scholars have debated this quite often, with the majority saying it’s a highly recommended Sunnah to do the sacrifice. The Hanafi School of thought, however, considers Qurbani obligatory upon those who can afford it.

This would mean that if you are of sane mind and financially able, you should give Qurbani and not neglect this duty.

The Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) stated regarding Qurbani that

“It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim.”

(Tirmidhi)

Who Needs to Pay for Qurbani

So, if it’s compulsory, who needs to pay for Qurbani? Qurbani is required for every adult Muslim who is mentally sound and has enough wealth above their basic needs.

Each individual who is eligible to give Qurbani within a household should give their own sacrifice. Children are not required to give Qurbani. However, if someone wishes to complete a Qurbani on their behalf then they can do so, only after fulfilling their own Qurbani first.

How Much is Qurbani?

Many also ask how much is Qurbani? The cost of Qurbani entirely depends on the type of animal chosen to be sacrificed and the country in which the sacrifice is taking place.

A sheep or goat is counted as one share, whilst a cow, buffalo, or camel can be shared between up to seven people.

Prices will vary each year depending on the location and its availability, but many charities, such as Al Qulub, offer fixed pricing so that it becomes easier to donate and fulfil the obligation of Qurbani.

Is Online Qurbani Allowed

With a variety of options available in today’s modern world, many ask, is online Qurbani allowed? The answer is yes, as long as the Qurbani that is carried out is with accuracy and in accordance with the Islamic rulings.

Al Qulub Trust takes Qurbani donations that help arrange the purchase, sacrifice, and distribution of meat on your behalf. This is helpful to those who are unable to physically carry out their own Qurbani and wish to have their Qurbani meat reach those most in need around the world.

The key factor when it comes to Qurbani is your intention and sincerity behind the act. As long as you have the right intention when you donate money for your Qurbani, and the process of the sacrifice is carried out following Islamic guidelines, online Qurbani is valid.

The Purpose and Spirit of Qurbani

As mentioned above, Qurbani is more than just about the sacrifice; it is about sincerity and the willingness to do something for the sake of Allah. Allah reminds us of this in the Quran when He says,

“Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah. Rather, it is your piety that reaches Him.”

[Quran 22:37]

When we give Qurbani, we are learning to care for others, especially those facing food poverty. For many families and communities, the period of Eid al-Adha is the only time they get to eat meat throughout the year.

Qurbani is also a practice to remind us to let go of what we love for the sake of Allah, and to trust Him in all matters of our lives, knowing He will do what is best for us.

You can fulfil your duty during the time of Eid al Adha by donating your Qurbani through Al Qulub Trust. Once you complete your donation, we will send you a receipt of proof of Qurbani with a form of media evidence so that you can be assured that your Qurbani has been fulfilled. Donate now and help bring joy to the lives of those in need.
