Donate your Qurbani and bring a smile to the faces of your Muslim brothers and sisters around the World.
(Holy Quran: Surah al-Haj v37)
Qurbani is an Islamic ritual where an animal is sacrificed during the yearly Eid al-Adha celebration. This sacrifice is carried out as an act of worship to show devotion to Islam and Allah (SWT). Every eligible Muslim worldwide performs this act however they can to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his unwavering commitment to his faith. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was instructed by Allah (SWT) to sacrifice his son Isma’il (AS) as an act of obedience to His command. However, before it could be done, Allah (SWT) sent down a ram to sacrifice instead as a reward for Ibrahim’s (AS) utter devotion. This is where Qurbani began, and ever since, Muslims have made an animal sacrifice during Eid al-Adha.
Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, which is the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During this celebration, Muslims all over the world perform Qurbani to show submission to the will of Allah (SWT) and express gratitude for His mercy and provision. Alongside this, Qurbani focuses on bringing the ummah together and helping the poor through this sacrifice, as the meat is shared with those in need to provide them with a proper, nutritious meal.
Many wonder is Qurbani obligatory? The answer to this question depends on which school of thought (madhab) a Muslim follows. Qurbani is seen as a necessary obligation (wajib) in the Hanafi school for every sane adult Muslim who possesses wealth in excess of their needs. This means that it’s still a duty based on strong but non-definitive evidence, but it isn’t a clear obligation that can be found in the core pillars of Islam. The Hanafi school see it as an obligation that is still sinful if not carried out without a valid excuse.
For the Hanbali, Maliki and Shafi’i schools of thought (madhab), Qurbani isn’t a duty but is Sunnah Mu’akkadah. This means that it’s a highly recommended act of worship for those with the means, and not doing it is disliked (makruh), but it’s not sinful. Qurbani is strongly encouraged in these schools as it’s a prophetic tradition that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regularly performed.
Yes, you can use a Muslim charity for Qurbani if you cannot carry out the sacrifice yourself. This is how the majority of the ummah fulfils their duty correctly and in line with Islamic regulations. Many regions won’t allow Muslims to carry out the sacrifice themselves, like in the UK, due to strict slaughter regulations that must be followed. Making a donation for Qurbani to a Muslim charity ensures that Muslims still fulfil their duty and perform the sacrifice correctly.
Millions of vulnerable families across the world struggle daily to feed themselves and live a comfortable life. With a lack of resources and no support, these families face hunger and malnutrition while experiencing unimaginable hardship. They can’t afford to eat basic staple food items and never see or taste any type of meat, even during blessed celebrations like Eid al-Adha. With your kindness and compassion, you can turn their devastation into joy through Qurbani, providing these struggling families with healthy meals to finally give them proper sustenance.
At Al-Qulub Trust, we bring vital help to some of the most troubled and crisis-stricken areas around the world, including Palestine, Yemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, Burundi and Tanzania. This year, our team will use your generous Qurbani donations to distribute the meat to those who need it most, offering essential relief to families who hardly have access to fresh meat.
Make your sacrifice count! Give Qurbani and help the poor and needy escape from hunger.
Your Qurbani is about spreading a message of love, support, and remembrance, as much as it’s about food!
So, who needs to give Qurbani? The Islamic rules for Qurbani are quite similar to those for Zakat. This act of worship should be carried out by every sane, adult Muslim who isn’t travelling, meaning only travelling persons can be exempt from giving Qurbani. It’s also based on a Muslim’s wealth, like Zakat, which means that those who possess wealth beyond their needs (above the Nisab threshold) should do this act. So, if a Muslim has equal to or more than the current level of Nisab, which is 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, they must perform Qurbani.
Many wonder when to give Qurbani and if there’s a deadline to do it by. As this act of worship is related to the celebration of Eid al-Adha, it must be done during this time for the act to count as Qurbani. This means that sacrifices can only be performed after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and must be completed by sunset on the 12th. If a sacrifice is done before the prayer or after the sun sets on the 12th, then it’s an act of Sadaqah instead.
Yes, you can give Qurbani shares to Al-Qulub Trust rather than making a donation for a whole animal. We provide the opportunity for you to donate a share of a bigger animal, such as a cow, which will allow you to give 1/7 of that animal to those in need. This option is perfect for families to all contribute together to a bigger animal and help many people in need, making it more affordable for everyone to fulfil their obligation while still providing a lot of meat to those in desperate need. As well as Qurbani shares, we give you the chance to donate money to sacrifice one whole animal, like a sheep or cow, to help countless lives in poverty-stricken areas.
